What to do after a car accident in Washington

A simple checklist for the scene and the days after, so nothing important gets missed.

By Rhino Insurance · Updated October 2026 · General information, not legal advice

At the scene

  1. Check for injuries and call 911 if anyone is hurt or the road is blocked.
  2. Move to a safe spot if you can, and turn on your hazard lights.
  3. Exchange names, phone numbers, insurance companies and policy numbers with the other driver.
  4. Take photos of every vehicle, the plates, the scene and any injuries.
  5. Get names and phone numbers from witnesses.
  6. Be polite, but don't argue about or admit fault. Let the insurers sort that out.

The same day

Report the accident to your insurance company as soon as you can. The claims phone number is on your ID card, and most carriers take reports 24/7.

If police didn't come to the scene and someone was hurt or there was significant damage, Washington may require you to file a collision report yourself. Check the Washington State Patrol website or ask us.

During the claim

  • Keep receipts for towing, rental cars and medical visits.
  • Get repair estimates if your carrier asks for them, and ask before authorizing repairs.
  • Write down every call with the adjuster: the date, the name and what was said.

After it's settled

An accident can change your price at renewal. If it goes up, call or text us and we'll re-shop your coverage with other carriers.
