General liability built around your trade.
General liability can pay for injuries to other people and damage to their property caused by your business or your work, plus your legal defense, under your policy's terms and limits. We match limits and endorsements to your trade and your contracts.
- Meets Washington L&I contractor registration requirements
- Additional insured and waiver endorsements
- Limits matched to your trade and contracts
What general liability covers, in plain English
Coverage, limits and exclusions vary by carrier and policy. Your policy documents are what decide a claim, and we walk you through them before you buy.
Third-party bodily injury
Injuries to customers, vendors or the public caused by your business operations or your work, like someone tripping over materials at a job site.
Third-party property damage
Damage to other people's property, like a client's floor ruined by a leak you caused or a neighbor's fence hit by your equipment.
Products and completed operations
Injury or damage that happens after a job is finished or a product is sold, caused by that work or product.
Your own faulty work
General liability usually does not pay to redo or repair your own defective work. It may cover damage your work causes to other property, depending on the policy wording.
Personal and advertising injury
Claims such as defamation, false arrest, privacy violations or copyright problems in your advertising.
Medical payments
Small medical bills for someone hurt at your premises or operations, regardless of fault.
Legal defense
Many policies pay defense costs in addition to your limits, but some reduce your limit as defense costs are paid. How defense works depends on your policy.
Certificates and additional insureds
Certificates of insurance prove coverage to clients and general contractors. Additional insured endorsements add them to your policy when a contract requires it.

General Liability questions
What insurance do Washington contractors need to register with L&I?
General liability of at least $200,000 public liability and $50,000 property damage, or a $250,000 combined single limit, plus a contractor bond. Many general contractors and clients require $1 million or more. See our bond page.
Does general liability cover mistakes in my own work?
Usually not. The cost to fix or redo your own work is normally excluded. Damage your work causes to other property may be covered, depending on the policy wording.
Does general liability cover my employees if they get hurt?
No. In Washington, workers' compensation goes through the state Department of Labor & Industries. General liability covers injuries to people outside your business.
Does it cover my tools and equipment?
No. Tools and equipment need an inland marine or contractor's equipment policy. We can quote it with your GL.
How do I get a certificate of insurance?
Once your policy is active, ask us and we'll issue it, usually the same business day. Our COI guide explains what clients ask for.
Do I need builder's risk too?
If you're building or remodeling, often yes. GL covers injury and damage to others, and builder's risk covers the structure itself. Read builder's risk vs. GL.
