The basics

What SR-22 covers, in plain English

Coverage, limits and exclusions vary by carrier and policy. Your policy documents are what decide a claim, and we walk you through them before you buy.

What it is

A filing, not a policy

An SR-22 is a certificate of financial responsibility. Your insurer files it with the DOL to prove you carry at least the required liability coverage. You buy an auto policy, and the insurer attaches the SR-22 to it.

Who needs it

After a serious violation

Washington usually requires one after a DUI, driving uninsured, certain at-fault accidents, or to reinstate a suspended license. Your DOL letter tells you if you need it.

How long

Usually three years

Most drivers keep the SR-22 for three years. Your DOL letter has your exact period. If the policy cancels, the insurer tells the DOL and your license can be suspended again.

No car?

Non-owner or broadform SR-22

If you don't own a car, a non-owner or broadform policy insures you as the driver and can carry the SR-22. These are often less expensive than an owner policy.

Questions

SR-22 questions

Is an SR-22 a type of insurance?

No. It is a filing your insurer makes with the DOL to prove you carry liability insurance. You still need an auto policy, and the SR-22 is attached to it.

How fast can you file my SR-22?

Usually within 24 hours once your policy is bound and the first payment is made. The DOL then updates your record, which can take a few days.

I don't own a car. What do I need?

A non-owner or broadform policy. It insures you as the driver and can carry the SR-22. Read our non-owner SR-22 guide.

Will an SR-22 raise my rates?

The filing fee is small. What raises the price is the violation behind it. We shop carriers that write high-risk drivers to find you options.

What happens if my policy lapses?

Your insurer must tell the DOL, and your license can be suspended again. Call us before a payment is missed so we can help.

What happens if I move out of Washington?

You usually still have to keep the Washington filing until the requirement ends. Call us before you move. After a DUI, see our license reinstatement guide.
