Umbrella insurance for when one policy isn't enough.
An umbrella adds liability limits above your other policies. When a large claim uses up your general liability, auto or stop-gap limit, the umbrella can pay more, under its terms. Contractors often need one to meet contract requirements, and families use one to protect their savings.
- Commercial and personal umbrellas
- Matched to your contract requirements
- Quoted with your underlying policies
What umbrella insurance covers, in plain English
Coverage, limits and exclusions vary by carrier and policy. Your policy documents are what decide a claim, and we walk you through them before you buy.
Extra limits on top
The umbrella pays after an underlying policy, like your GL or auto, pays its full limit. A $1 million GL policy with a $2 million umbrella gives you up to $3 million for a covered claim.
Commercial umbrella
Sits above general liability, commercial auto and stop-gap employer's liability. General contractors and public projects often require $2 to $5 million in total limits.
Personal umbrella
Sits above your home and auto policies. Useful if a serious car accident or an injury at your home could lead to a lawsuit larger than those limits.
Underlying limits
The umbrella carrier requires minimum limits on your other policies, often $1 million on GL and auto, or $250,000/$500,000 on personal auto. If those drop, a gap can open below the umbrella.
What's the difference?
An excess policy follows the terms of the policy below it. A true umbrella can sometimes cover claims the underlying policy doesn't, after a retention you pay. The wording varies, and we explain which you're getting.
What it doesn't cover
Your own property, your own faulty work, and anything excluded by the umbrella. Professional liability and pollution are usually excluded too.

Umbrella questions
My contract requires $2 million. Can I use an umbrella?
Usually, yes. Most contracts accept a $1 million GL policy plus a $1 million umbrella that follows the same terms. Check the contract wording, and we'll match it.
Does an umbrella cover my commercial auto?
A commercial umbrella usually sits above commercial auto, if the auto policy is listed as underlying. See commercial auto.
How much does an umbrella cost?
It depends on your business, vehicles and limits. Personal umbrellas are often a few hundred dollars a year for $1 million. We'll quote both.
Do I need my home and auto with the same company?
Some carriers require it for a personal umbrella. Others don't. We'll compare both.
Does it cover my employees' injuries?
Not directly. L&I covers workers' injuries. A commercial umbrella can sit above stop-gap employer's liability.
