The short answer
Personal auto policies are written for commuting and personal errands. Many limit or exclude coverage when a vehicle is used mainly for business. If a claim happens during work and the carrier decides it was business use, you could be left without coverage.
Signs you need commercial auto
- The vehicle is titled or leased in your business's name.
- You haul tools, equipment or materials to job sites.
- Employees drive the vehicle.
- You make deliveries or transport goods for pay.
- The vehicle has signage, a lift, a rack or other business equipment.
- You need a USDOT number or other filings.
Rideshare and app-based delivery driving have their own rules and endorsements. Tell us exactly how you drive and we'll match the right policy.
Employees using their own cars
If staff run errands in their own vehicles, ask about hired and non-owned auto coverage. It protects the business when an employee's personal policy isn't enough.
