What is a certificate of insurance (COI)?

Why clients and general contractors ask for one, the terms on them, and how to get one fast.

Proof, not a policy

A certificate of insurance is a one-page summary that proves your business has coverage: who the insurer is, the policy dates and the limits. Clients, property managers and general contractors ask for one before you start work.

Terms you'll see in contracts

  • Certificate holder: the company asking for proof. They get a copy of the certificate.
  • Additional insured: the client gets some protection under your policy for claims from your work. This needs an endorsement on the policy, not just a line on the certificate.
  • Waiver of subrogation: your insurer agrees not to go after the client to recover a claim.
  • Primary and non-contributory: your policy pays first, before the client's own insurance.
Send us the insurance section of the contract. We check what it asks for before issuing the certificate, so you don't get stuck at the job site.

How fast can I get one?

For current clients, most certificates go out the same business day. Request one from our Clients page, or text us the holder's name and email.
