What electrical contractor insurance covers, in plain English
Coverage, limits and exclusions vary by carrier and policy. Your policy documents are what decide a claim, and we walk you through them before you buy.
Electrical contractor license
Electrical work in Washington needs an electrical contractor license from L&I, not just a general contractor registration, plus a designated administrator or master electrician. L&I sets the bond and insurance requirements for the license.
Fire after the job
A wiring fault can start a fire months later. Products and completed operations coverage, part of general liability, responds to that kind of claim, so carriers look closely at your completed-ops history.
What carriers ask
Residential vs. commercial work, new construction vs. service, solar and battery work, and how much you subcontract. Work outside your license class can cause coverage problems.
Your own work
General liability usually doesn't pay to redo your own faulty wiring. It may cover the damage the fault causes to other property, depending on the policy.
Tools, meters and wire
Testers, tools and materials on the van need a contractor's equipment policy. See tools and equipment insurance.
Workers' comp and stop-gap
Workers' comp for employees comes from L&I. Many contracts also ask for employer's liability, which in Washington is stop-gap coverage.

Electrical questions
Is an electrical license the same as contractor registration?
No. Electrical contractors get a separate electrical contractor license from L&I, with its own bond and insurance requirements. L&I can confirm what applies to you.
Does general liability cover a fire caused by my wiring?
Often yes, under products and completed operations, if the policy covers it and no exclusion applies. Redoing the wiring itself is usually excluded.
Do you insure solar and EV charger installers?
Yes, through carriers that write that work. Tell us how much of your work it is, since some carriers rate it differently.
My tools were stolen from my van. Am I covered?
Not under GL or auto. You need a tools and equipment policy.
